news paper that says News

I have just two more classes until I graduate with my associates degree in web design and development.  Right now I am studying web site SEO and marketing. After this class I have my final web project class which will help me set up my portfolio.  I’m so close, today I applied for some jobs, I hope I hear back from them I’d like to work while I finish off school with my bachelors degree.  It is hard to get experience everyone wants some experience but how can you get it if no one will hire you.  I sure hope I hear back from some of these internships.  Here is a link to my Advanced Scripting Techniques class you can see some of my work from school.

I’m actually a little behind as school started the week before last week.  I was so busy I didn’t have time for much else.  I am taking Advanced Scripting Techniques and I have the great fortune to have Matthew Leach as my professor.  He is an excellent instructor and has written several ebooks on the subject.  The book I have is called Code for Flash Designers and it is wonderful.   It covers many of the subjects that I am learning in class now.  They reworked the assignments between web 220 and web 240 so I am getting some of the same projects over but that is ok because Professor Leach is teaching me much more information than I learned from my last instructor.  During week 1 we were to put up some of our web 220 assignments for review and now looking back at the first two projects I have really made some improvements.  I have a slight advantage as I have seen these assignments before but it has been a learning experience none the less.  I just learned how to animate a layer mask to show content instead of animating the content it looks impressive and better.  I have also learned a bit of action scripting code.  What is really wonderful is that I was able to correct all my mistakes myself.  I would email the professor my problem but before he had time to answer I had already fixed my problem.  I did this about three times when all was said and done.  If you would like to see my projects you can click here and then click on the button that says Transitions.  I would love to hear from you and what you think.  Eventually all the buttons will have a project behind them but for now Transitions is the only one as that is where we are now in class.  It is nice for a change to actually be done early so that I can do more research and study at I am so happy to be back in class and learning.  Having an instructor like Matthew Leach is a real treat he is by far one of the best instructors I’ve had at IADT. He really challenges me to do my best and makes me think.  When I have a problem and email him a question he doesn’t just give me the answer, he will give me a clue or hint but I have to figure it out.  He has more faith in me than I do myself and that is wonderful.  I strongly recommend that if you are interested in learning Action Scripting 3.0 to pick up one of  the professors books.  If you click on the book title I have listed it links to his website where you can learn more.

Water faucet with running water.I just put up a couple of links in my sidebar menu.  I really enjoy both of these sites and wanted to share them.  The first is  A List Apart, it is a site that is very informative about all things Web Design/Development.  I like the way it is laid out it makes me feel as if I am reading an old-time news paper.  I just like the feel of it. I don’t want to rush through it I think the colors are soothing, it just appeals to me besides having great information.

The second site I put up is,  it is a well-known online training company.  I discovered Lynda about 5 months ago and have learned all I can.  The courses are well done and they do a good job at getting your feet wet for further study that you may want to do in that subject.  I spend most of my time in the web design section but there are other sections on business and photography as well.  For the most part the courses are up to date, however, there are some that I feel need to be re-worked, like the one I used for  my WordPress site.  It was for an older version of what is now available and though there were not to many differences, I found I needed/wanted,  the new changes explained and discussed.

I hope you find these sites useful and as enjoyable as I have.

Best Practices Web Revision

As you know keywords are very important to SEO and the placement of keywords is just as important. You can put keywords anywhere you can put text in the website, however, there are specific locations that crawlers look for these keywords. You also have to be careful not to overuse keywords as to “stuff” the website as this will penalize your site as well. So where do we start?

First off  start with changing the URL you need to keep it concise.  Focusing on the brand name will work but if you can add a keyword to it all the better. That just gives  your URL more searchable words.  Something like This gives the company name and if someone searches sports gear we get a hit on that as well.

The page title tag is important to get right, it is what the search engine shows the user for the clickable link that will take them to the website.  It is important to have keywords here because the search engine crawler looks here to try to decide just what this page is about. You want the right key words here as each page has a title page.

Lets address our anchor text. This is what we use to describe a hyperlink on the website. Here we need to use keywords and not the company name. Anchor text like “low-cost sports gear” when linked will tell the search engine that this page is about low-cost sports gear. This anchor text is a more searchable term and will improve traffic to the site.

Headings H1-H6 have an important role in SEO. Headings simply help the crawlers understand what the pages are about. This is a perfect time to place some useful keywords. Be advised, however, that you must change the content in each header on each page or the crawler will think you are trying to “stuff” your site with keywords. On average websites have about 6 header tags.

Something that is easy to do is to make sure all of your images have alt tags.  Alt tags show the image in words this is done for users that are blind or disabled and use screen readers. This is your  opportunity to add keywords to the alt tags and make them descriptive, more keywords means more hits.

Meta tags were once thought of as being very important in SEO, it has now however, been determined to have little or no bearing what so ever. Meta tags are mainly a way for the search engines to find your website. It is still a best practice to fill this information out in full detail as it gives users information about the website.

I have mentioned a couple of times in my article about “stuffing” and overuse of keywords. There is a best practice for keywords and each area has a specific determinations about how much is too much. Many experts have different opinions on the subject so we will want to research this topic in detail when the time is right.

Greetings to all,

A bright yellow blue red green black hot air balloon.  I feel really great about getting my site up and running.  This is my first “live” published, actually working website.  I have done several projects in my online classes at the International Academy of Design and Technology but nothing that says to the public “Here I am, what do you think?”  Eventually I will go self-hosted but for now I feel this is a good place to get my feet wet there are so many features to learn from and learning is what I am all about.  Hopefully this nice little website will attract some business and my blog will gain a few followers/readers, only time will tell but I feel I’m off to a good start.  So grab a handhold and hang on it’s going to be a great ride.
